The Cost Of A Footprint
‘The cost of a footprint’ is a concept designed to look at the changes in our environment that are created by the doing of man. A footprint is an impression on a surface made from a shoe or foot. However, a footprint is a term also used to understand the impact on climate change. Therefore, the cost of a footprint is the idea that the impressions made by humans can lead to irreversible consequences in the environment that cost nature and wildlife.
For this concept, I plan on showing the environmental damage though the use of manual manipulation. The manual manipulation evokes the irreversible change in the environment metaphorically as the physical destruction of the images can not be returned to their original state. Environmental damage can be perceived in a variety of formations. For example, pollution, deforestation, overpopulation, etc. Throughout this module these changes will be portrayed through the physical manipulation of my images.
I will be exploring artists that use a manipulation techniques to help aid in creating a body of work that represents this concept in a clear form. Physically manipulating my images will destroy the original integrity and create a new perspective and message for the photographs. Furthermore, this concept is designed to force the viewer to confront the damage done to our environment. For example, deforestation, the culling of a 500-year-old tree cannot be fixed by planting a sapling. This concept forces the viewer to look at the damage on a deeper level and how much of an impact humans have had on our environment.
Banished By Benevolence
'Banished' is a term used to describe someone who has been exiled, or extradited from a place or community, this can be for a multitude of reasons, for example political reasons, or sometimes a crime. This is from the perspective of a country or as a government. However, in the view of a family or a small community it could be down to beliefs, respect, or values. This can lead to the explement from the family/community, leaving the person to fend for themself and feel isolated.
'Benevolence' is a word to describe someone who is kind-hearted and thoughtful, these types of people are usually depicted as being someone who is close to you. For example, a family member, loved one, or someone who is a part of your close-knit community.
Therefore, for the idea 'Banished By Benevolence' is almost impossible as one would imagine that your loved ones could never turn their back on you. This theme makes the investigation interesting as it creates the question of how could someone who is described as kind-hearted and thoughtful ever turn their back on you, leaving the gut feeling of isolation and deprivation from your family or community.
Banished by benevolence is a concept designed to look upon the lives of those who were cast out by their loved ones. This theme will explore the lifestyles of both privileged and neglected classes in society, it will link with the subject of inside/outside photography as it will show the physical insides and out of the socio economical classes, and how isolating it can be for the both. For example, the loneliness the rejected can feel, but how detaching it can be to be so privileged. This sense of isolation and abandonment is not only felt physically on the outside i.e. being cast away by not only society but family also. But felt emotionally too on the inside. For example, the lack of connection from loved ones or those closest to you. Although the contrast in both classes are strong, the feeling of separation is felt just the same bringing the two closer with the sense of absent connection. I will portray this theme using thought-provoking photographs inspired by artists researched throughout this investigation.
